Professor Akpan H. Ekpo, FNES
Professor Akpan Hogan Ekpo was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. He is from Ikot Obio Eka in Etinan Local Government, Akwa-Ibom State. After completing his secondary school education with flying colours, he proceeded to the USA for further studies. He was in the Dean’s list throughout his undergraduate studies at Howard University, Washington, DC and was on full scholarship based on his academic performance. He obtained a B.A (Hons. Cumlaude) in Economics in 1976/77. He also studied at Northwestern University, Illinois, USA and the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. He has PhD (Economics) and PhD (Business Administration). He did his post-doctoral executive education at Harvard University, USA. He also attended University of Oxford and the World Bank Institute, Washington, DC, USA. He has lectured in several colleges and universities in the USA, Nigeria and Africa. He has held several positions in the academia including Vice-Chancellor, University of Uyo (Federal) and Vice-Chancellor of the now Akwa-Ibom State University.
Professor Ekpo has published over 200 articles in referred journals, chapters I books and other recognized outlets. He has published 8 books and edited 3. He is a consultant to several national and global institutions and has ben a visiting scholar to both the World bank and the IMF at various times. He belongs to several professional associations in Nigeria and abroad. He is a fellow of the Nigerian Economic Society and was once its President. He has advised all levels of government in Nigeria – Municipal, State and Federal. He chairs and is a member of the board of several public, private institutions and think tanks in and outside Nigeria. He was chairman Ministerial Advisory Committee, Federal Ministry of Finance, Abuja; non-executive director of the Central Bank of Nigeria and its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC); steering committee member of both vision 2010 and 2020. Presently, he is a member of the Board of Economists of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Academics, mostly economist, within and outside Nigeria have published two books in his honour:
- Fiscal Policy Management in Nigeria (2016)
- The Dynamics of Africa’s Economic Development (2018).
He is the immediate past Director General and Head of Mission of the West Africa Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM), owned by English speaking Central Banks of West Africa. He is currently Professor of Economics and Public Policy and Executive Chairman, Foundation for Economic Research and Training (FERT) based in Uyo and Lagos.
