ionel Messi has apparently been confirmed as the winner of the 2021 Ballon d’Or, and he is abreast of this information. Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain is the clear favourite to win an unprecedented seventh Ballon d’Or award, according to fans.
Last season, the 34-year-old Argentine attacker was in outstanding form for Barcelona, netting 30 goals in 35 La Liga matches. And Messi’s total propelled him to his sixth Pichichi Trophy (Marca’s top scorer award for a season), beating out Karim Benzema and Gerard Moreno.
Messi will get the iconic Golden Ball during this year’s ceremony in Paris on November 29, 2021 according to RTP Sports. This will be Messi’s record-extending seventh Golden Ball. The 34-year-old beat over long-time adversary Cristiano Ronaldo, Erling Haaland, and Robert Lewandowski for probably the most coveted individual trophy in International football, in an interview with France Football magazine.
Messi now has five Golden Balls, two more than Ronaldo, and four more than Michel Platini, Johan Cruyff, and Marco van Basten, all of whom have won the trophy three times apiece.
The predicted victory for Messi ensures that his and Ronaldo’s Golden Ball supremacy will stretch at least another year, with Luka Modric the only other player to win the trophy in the previous 12 years – omitting 2020, when the prize was not given because of the pandemic.
The Argentine had another fantastic year after guiding his team to a Copa America victory – his first International trophy – and scoring 30 goals for Barcelona in La Liga previous season. After being unable to negotiate a new contract with Barcelona due to “financial and structural problems,” he made a surprise transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
Messi has yet to score in Ligue 1 for PSG, but he has scored three times in three Champions League outings this season. He produced an excellent solo goal against Manchester City and then added a brace in a 3-2 victory against RB Leipzig.
Marca conducted a reader poll to determine who should win the Ballon d’Or, and Messi came out on top with 34% of the vote. With 26% of the voting, Benzema, who has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or by the likes of Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane, came in second to Messi.
Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski finished third with 11% of the vote, joining Messi and Benzema on the Marca readers’ Ballon d’Or podium. The Spanish tabloid had earlier made a strong case for the Argentina captain to win the Ballon d’Or award ahead of Jorginho and N’Golo Kante.
Along with PSG colleagues Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, Messi was selected to France Football’s 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or.Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach of Paris Saint-Germain, argued that the Barcelona icon should receive the much-coveted individual award “without a doubt.”
“Without a doubt, Messi must win the Ballon d’Or,” he remarked.
“Even if I didn’t coach Messi, I’d still pick Messi .I’m speaking from the bottom of my heart.”
Messi, who last won the Ballon d’Or in 2019, said winning France Football’s award would be “magnificent.”
He told France Football, “I don’t feel like the favourite and I never liked to speak about it till the conclusion.”
“It would be fantastic if it occurs.”
The Ballon d’Or, which was originally awarded in 1956, is voted on by football writers, coaches, and national team captains.
The winner of the 2021 edition will be revealed on November 29 at the Théâtre du Chatelet in Paris.
